For Users Having Trouble Opening or Viewing Help Files

Recently, some users have reported problems opening or viewing help files. The topic pane displays 'Action canceled' or 'The page cannot be displayed.'

This is caused by a security update for Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. The security update blocks compiled help files (*.chm) that are being accessed across a network, including those that are downloaded from the Internet. This occurs with any .chm help files, not just those from Kepware.

If you encounter this problem, perform the following steps to open the help file successfully:

  • Download the help file (*.chm) to your computer. If you are trying to view a help file across your local network, copy the file to your computer (for example, to your computer's desktop). Double-click to open the file, and the Open File-Security Warning dialog box will be displayed. Uncheck "Always ask before opening this file." The file will then open normally.
  • Alternatively, download or copy the file to your computer, then browse to the file with Windows Explorer. Right-click on the filename and click Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the Unblock button. The file will then open normally.
